The number of complaints to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) rose by 10% in the final quarter of 2011, to 55,907.
However, the FOS revealed a drop in the number of cases that were settled in favour of the consumer in the same period. 68% of PPI complaints were settled in the consumer's favour compared to 92% between July and September.
According the FOS, around 80% of complaints it received were from a third party claims management company rahter than the consumer themselves, and they emphasised that there is absolutely no need to pay a PPI claims management company to make a complaint.
