Two-Thirds of Britons Ashamed of Debt

Two-thirds of Britons are embarrassed to talk about their debts according to a recent survey by uSwitch.

The survey showed that around two-thirds of Britons aren't happy to talk about their debt problems with friends and family. The report comes ahead of the latest insolvency figures to be published later this week. Almost 35,000 people were declared insolvent during the three months to the end of June and experts suggest worse is to come as public spending cuts come into effect.

Debt Free Me's goal to provide the best debt management for our clients has always called for people to be more open about their debt problems with both their families and themselves. These latest figures shows that the number of people dealing with their debt problems is increasing, there is still the taboo of being in debt.

Ann Robinson, of price comparison website uSwitch.com, said: "Some may see it as a sign of shamelessness, but for many Brits it's a case of desperate times calling for desperate measures. However, whereas in the past we would have kept quiet about the steps we're taking, today our attitudes towards discussing how we stay afloat have relaxed considerably. In our quest to conquer debt, important lessons are being learnt, and perhaps one of these is that a problem shared can be a problem halved."

After helping thousands of people struggling with debt, Debt Free Me are only too well aware of the consequences of keeping your worries bottled up. Everyday in the newspapers there's another tragic tale of a family ripped apart due to debt, which could have possibly been avoided had their debt problems been talked about.

However, on the plus side of this media coverage is the fact that people are now more willing to talk about their problems and receive the debt help that they need.
